Justin K. Haner, Ph.D.

I am a political scientist and postdoctoral research fellow at Brown University’s Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, where I study international law, security, and emerging technologies and specialize in computational research methodologies. From traditional security issues to artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, my research focuses on the transformative power that international law and organization can have on solving complex global and regional security problems.

My current project, Organizing Peace, analyzes the cumulative structural effects of the 79,287 international treaties signed across the globe between 1648 and 2022. This project leverages machine-learning to classify each of these treaties by topic, signatories, and a variety of other metrics in order to map and measure the structure of the international legal system and its effects on states’ foreign policy around the world.

I am also a committed public servant with twelve years of combined experience in the military and local government. As a former Captain in the US Army Infantry, I led a mechanized rapid reaction force just south of the Korean DMZ and was selected to serve as Executive Officer to the United Nations Command Honor Guard. I am currently an elected Representative for Town Meeting and appointed Capital Budget Committee board member in Walpole, MA, where I work on a variety of issues from promoting racial and gender inclusivity, to reducing our local impact on climate change.
